How Do You Get Health Care While Self-Employed?

One of the biggest misconceptions about self-employment is that it's impossible to get health coverage. Not only can you get health insurance without a 9-5, but you can actually get good coverage that doesn't break the bank.

You are probably wondering how in the world this is possible being that anytime you mention self-employment to one of your co-workers, they always ask what will you do about health insurance if you don't have a 9-5. Before we can talk about how to obtain a good health care policy, let me share three things you should consider BEFORE you even start shopping. 1) Do a full assessment of your needs If you don't assess your needs before shopping for coverage, then you will most likely end up with a not so great policy. When I say assess your needs, I mean everything. Is it just you or do you have a spouse and dependents who need coverage as well? Do you have pre-existing conditions that need to be addressed? Do you mainly need health care for routine stuff or do you need to see specialists? You can't pick a great policy if you don't know all the ends and outs your policy needs to cover. 2) See what resources are available in your local area Health care varies from state-to-state. Since being self-employed in 2011, I have lived in three different states and each health care experience has been a little different. Some states are more affordable than others when it comes to health care, and some states make finding health coverage as an individual vs. employer a very easy process. 3) Set your budget It is an absolute must that you know all of your numbers. What's the maximum amount you feel comfortable coming out of pocket? Are you comfortable with having a deductible? If you need prescriptions, factor that into your budget as well. Do not just enroll in a mediocre $500/month policy because you think you can't get better for cheaper. It's out there, you just have to know how to find it.
